Coaching staff names captains, other postseason awards

As the Alabama Crimson Tide football team gathered in Birmingham for its annual banquet to not only celebrate its SEC Championship and season as a whole, but also to receive confirmation that the Tide will be playing Notre Dame in the BCS National Championship, there were also some personal awards to give out.

Offensive lineman Barrett Jones, offensive lineman Chance Warmack and defensive lineman Damion Square were named team captains and will have their hand and footprints planted in cement near Denny Chimes at A-Day in 2013.

Here is a list of the other awards and the players who received them.

cj Most Valuable Player

Linebacker C.J. Mosley. Mosley led the team in tackles by a longshot with 99, towering above Trey Depriest, who is in second with 56. Mosley also tied the school record for career defensive touchdowns, with three. Mosley’s interception and 16-yard touchdown return against Michigan was his third, tying the mark set by Antonio Langham (1990-1993).

Iron Man Award

Running back T.J. Yeldon, kicker Cade Foster, H-Back Kelly Johnson and defensive lineman Jesse Williams.

tink Unsung Hero Award

Wide receiver Kenny Bell, defensive lineman Quinton Dial, long snapper Carson Tinker (pictured left, 51), linebacker Xzavier Dickson and place kicker Jeremy Shelley (pictured left, 5).

Outstanding Scholar Senior Award

Coaching Staff Players of the Week: Texas A&M

Despite suffering a 29-24 loss at the hands of the Aggies, the coaching staff recognized the following players for their efforts .

Offense: Amari Cooper and Eddie Lacy. Cooper caught six passes for 136 yards, a game-high, including one touchdown of 54 yards that brought Alabama within five points of Texas A&M’s lead and another 50-yard catch in the fourth quarter. Lacy contributed 127 all-purpose yards: 92 of them on the ground on 16 carries and the other 35 on four receptions.

Defense: C.J. Mosley and John Fulton. Mosley led the team with 14 tackles, 9 of them solo efforts, and added a sack that resulted in a loss of eight yards for the Aggies. He extended his lead on the team for total tackles this season, now standing at 83. Mosley was also an Honorable Mention for SEC Player of the Week. Fulton recorded a career-high four pass break-ups while adding five tackles, four of them solo.

Special Teams: Cody Mandell. Mandell averaged 56.5 yards per punt on his four punts against the Aggies. Mandell’s strong performance, including two kicks of 60 yards, put him at No. 14 in the nation in punting with a season average of 44 yards per punt.

Coaching Staff Players of the Week: LSU

The Alabama coaching staff has named its Players of the Week for the week of the Tide’s big road win against LSU.

Offense: D.J. Fluker, Cyrus Kouandjio and Kevin Norwood. Fluker and Kouandjio tied for the team-high with an 89 percent grade from the coaching staff. THe two also combined to help the offensive line lead the way for Alabama to run for 166 yards against the Tigers. Norwood caught five passes for 62 yards, including three-straight on the final touchdown drive.

Defense: Adrian Hubbard and Xzavier Dickson. Hubbard, also named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week, earned a career-high 12 tackles, including 2.5 tackles for a loss and 0.5 sacks. Dickson added five tackles.

Special Teams: Cody Mandell and Vinnie Sunseri. Mandell punted seven times for 45.1 yards per punt, including dropping two inside-the-20. Mandell booted one for 56 yards and another for 55. Sunseri had two of his four tackles in kick coverage.

Coaching Staff Players of the Week: Mississippi State

The Alabama coaching staff has named its Players of the Week for the week of the Mississippi State game.

Offense: Chance Warmack, Michael Williams and T.J. Yeldon. Warmack, also named SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week, had four pancake blocks to go along with no penalties in the win. Williams caught five passes for 38 yards, one of which was a nine-yard touchdown reception. Yeldon took the team lead for rushing yards after his 10-carry, 84 yard performance gave him 649 on the season.

Defense: C.J. Mosley and Denzel Devall. Mosley makes his way back to the Players of the Week list, now only missing one week. Mosley was credited with seven tackles, four of them solo efforts, and a quarterback hurry. Devall, a true freshman, imposed his will on the Bulldog pocket with two tackles for a loss, one sack and two quarterback hurries.

Special Teams: John Fulton, Christion Jones, Cyrus Jones and Cody Mandell. Fulton notched two special teams tackles in the game and downed one of Mandell’s punts at the 2-yard-line. Christion Jones forced two fumbles in special teams units to go along with his one reception for 22 yards. Cyrus Jones had two kick returns for 76 yards, including the game-opening 41-yard return. Mandell punted five times for an average of 42.2 yards.three landing inside the 20, with a long of 61.
