#BamaSB has a great haul in SEC yearly awards

The Southeastern Conference announced its individual awards for the 2012 softball season. Predictably, the Crimson Tide had a great showing. Here’s a list of players (and coach) that got honored.

Coach of the Year: Patrick Murphy

SEC Pitcher of the Year: Jackie Traina

First-Team All-SEC: Jackie Traina, Kaila Hunt and Jennifer Fenton

Second-Team All-SEC: Cassie Reilly-Boccia, Jazlyn Lunceford, Kayla Braud, Kendall Dawson and Amanda Locke

All-Defensive Team: Jazlyn Lunceford at RF, Cassie Reilly-Boccia at 1B and Kendall Dawson at C.

Co-Scholar Athlete of the Year: Jennifer Fenton

For this week’s column, I took a closer look at the Alabama softball team that I watched all weekend long and found what could be their Achilles heel. Take a look.

Softball now 17-0 after home tourney win

If you want dominance, look no further than the Alabama softball team. A winning streak of 17 to start the season is a truly remarkable feat. But, it does come with some minor hiccups. You can read about one in yesterday’s close call with the UAB Blazers in an article written by Crimson White Sports Reporter Morgan Upton.

3-Star Hitter, Leftfielder Kayla Braud: One hit, one RBI and one run scored on three at-bats. Also walked once.

4-Star Hitter, Centerfielder Jazlyn Lunceford: One hit with two RBIs in four at-bats. Did not strikeout.

5-Star Hitter, Catcher Kendall Dawson: Two hits, two RBIs and one run scored in three at-bats.


Win, Alabama Starter Leslie Jury: 7 innings pitch (complete game), gave up six hits and one earned run. Walked four batters and struck out 11.

Top of the Second

With one out, Danielle Richard doubled to centerfield. Jackey Branham walked. A double steal moves both runners successfully and an error moves them one more, scoring Richard and putting Branham on third. Bama up 1-0. Kendall Dawson triples to RF and an error gets her home. Bama up 3-0. Keima Davis gets HBP, then advances to third via one steal and one error. A Kayla Braud slap to the shortstop for a single scores Davis. Bama up 4-0.

Top of the Third

With one out, Danielle Richard was HBP, and then stole second. Jackey Branham walked. Kendall Dawson singled up the middle, Richard scored. Bama up 5-0.

Bottom of the Fourth

Leslie Jury gave up a single to leftfield to Maryland’s Kathy McLaughlin. A stand-up double by Vangie Galindo scored Maryland’s only run of the day. Bama up 5-1.

Top of the Fifth

Jackey Branham opened the inning with a walk. A Kendall Dawson groundout moved Branham to second. With one out, Kayla Braud walked. A wild pitch moved Branham to 3rd and Braud to 2nd. Jazlyn Lunceford doubled to left-center, scoring Branham and Braud. Bama up 7-1.

Top of the Seventh

Keima Davis opened the inning by being hit by a pitch, then stealing second. With one out, pinch hitter Chaunsey Bell hit a stand-up double to the warning track in leftfield that scored Davis. Bama up 8-1. A groundout by Cassie Reilly-Boccia moved Bell to third. Jadyn Spencer singled to leftfield, scoring Bell. Bama up 9-1.
